Defying Soul Gravity - Part One

Cruising down the highway, I silently ask God about the boredom and discouragement that has weighed on me for weeks. Nothing in life seems desirable or interesting. I feel trapped in numbness, but want to scream – for freedom maybe. ‘What is it God? What?!’  Suddenly, seemingly unrelated scripture pops into my head. ‘Faith without works is dead’. (James 2:26)  ‘Uh… okay… so my faith is suffocating?’

Oddly, and perhaps this is from my Mennonite background, my knee-jerk response is to instantly defend inaction as though to ‘do good works’ were prideful or unnecessary. Weird! It’s biblical; necessary, obedient, and a natural outflow of gratitude and love.

“Tell them to use their money to do good. They should be rich in good works and generous to those in need, always being ready to share with others.
1 Timothy 6:18

I agree with God that there is good for me to do, and suddenly feel a sense of meaning and purpose – freedom from the relentless unfeeling that had gripped me. ‘God can use me! Thank you Lord! …now what do you have for me to do?’

Stay tuned for the rest of the story tomorrow... (you'll really like the second part!)
