Hands cupping mugs, we
swap stories about sewing, shopping, childhood tendencies. Elbows on table, we
three are completely different, yet the same as her in some way. I’ve known her
for over thirty years, yet never noticed that dash of daring she shares with
her second daughter. Trading courageous tales, they grin at uncovered sameness.
I, the oldest, look just like her - my face, the way I walk and sway arms, even
the way I laugh, and get caught mouth-open in too many pictures. And the
youngest, adorned in jewels, gestures wide-eyed- much like mom - about sales
and deals. Mom excitedly shares her own bargain adventures, and rings and
trinkets are paraded in celebration. Each of us shares a unique bond with mom
that no one else can.
And it hits me – this is how it is with God.
I love the idea of never understanding God. Any god that can
be understood – fully known – by me, is indeed a small god. One of my favorite
things on this planet is to look up at the cloud-filled sky, or star-spattered
night. The moment I do, a sigh escapes as the huge canvass stretches - a
gigantic reminder of ...smallness. And if the sky is simply a made thing, a trifle
… what can I possibly know of a God that big? … and if his love is deeper and
higher…? Oh! The endlessness of it thrills me!
And I’m fully known by Him. He is bigger than sky, has
created billions of humans across thousands of years, and he knows my every
thought. He loves me and always has. I’ll never know Him like that, but I get
to spend my life here and later learning, discovering, pursuing.
“And may you have the power to understand, as all God’s people should, how wide, how long, how high, and how deep his love is. May you experience the love of Christ, though it is too great to understand fully. Then you will be made complete
with all the fullness of life and power
that comes from God.”
Ephesians 3:18,19
“Then the way you live will always honor and please
the Lord,
and your lives will produce every kind of good fruit.
All the while, you will grow as you learn to know God better and
better.”
Colossians 1:10

This is really lovely. We are alike, and yet uniquely different. What a beautiful paradox.s
Thanks!
... I stopped by your place again this week. I just LOVE the title of your new blog. It gets me every time, and the impact stays with me long after I leave. Powerful challenge. :)
Thanks! I had the title years ago...but didn't know what to do with it!
It's a gem alright! I just shared a link to your blog on Facebook. :)
Thanks, I really appreciate that. The stories I'm featuring really deserve as much exposure as they can get!
Each a facet and each as fascinating. Both your post Kim and whatintheworldrudoing.
